On a mid week gorgeous sunny day I decided to indulge in a little cake and coffee. I made my way to Chez Dre Patisserie, in South Melbourne. I have been salivating over their blood orange cake since I spotted a review in the local paper. This cake is pure bliss and the Chez Dre exceeded all my expectations.
When I walk into a cafe I have never been to before I want a sense of familiarity, like I have been there a hundred times before. This means feeling comfortable, cosy and friendly customer service. For mid week lunch, Chez Dre was filled with the hustle and bustle of a sunday brunch (this was helped by the large table of 20 odd, female pensioners celebrating a fellow old ducks birthday). The atmosphere is glorious with cosy booths, paint striped timber communal tables, a court yard and beautiful fresh flowers.
Although I was there during lunch service I only order coffee and cake. However, I could not stop feeling food envy of everyone around me enjoying fresh baguettes served on wood chopping broads, big lushes salads and heart warming soups. Despite being distracted by all the wonderful food surrounding me, My eye lit up like a kid in a lollie shop when my cake and coffee arrives. The cake looked like a sparkling precious stone with it's glistering blood orange jelly coating and on first taste it certainly didn't disappoint.
